The realm’s darkest secret is out.
The cruelty of the capital and the power-hungry King Arden have scattered Bleak and her companions across the continents.
On the run in a foreign land, Bleak finds herself tied to some unexpected strangers. When the answers she yearns for are finally within reach, she must face the hard truths of her past, and take her fate into her own hands before it’s too late.
Meanwhile, secrets and magic unravel as a dark power corrupts the realm. Bleak’s friends are forced to decide where their loyalties lie, and who, if anyone, they can trust.
But one thing is certain: war is coming, and they must all be ready when it does.
Intriguing and action-packed, Reign of Mist is the second instalment in Helen Scheuerer’s epic YA fantasy series, The Oremere Chronicles.
Dark Secrets, Betrayal, Loyalties Tested And A Whole Lot Of Ass Kicking!
I’ve just this minute finished reading Reign Of Mist and my first thought is – HOLY F*CKING SH*T! I so enjoyed the first book Heart Of Mist when I read it last year, but this sequel has blown. me. away!
Ok, I’m calm, let’s go into detail shall we.
Bleak – she is honestly one of the greatest female characters to ever exist. She started out as this scrawny little pick pocket, who couldn’t go a day without getting tanked and seriously needed to know when to shut her trap – well she could still work on that one, but anyway – she has developed and grown so much in this sequel and she’s not the same person she once was. She didn’t know who she was and didn’t like her powers (yes powers folks!) but after everything she has experienced and been through, she has accomplished so much more and is all the better for it. I also love her new relationship with Rion and I honestly just want to snuggle with the big fury panther. He is a tremendous addition to the story.
I had so many new characters to get my head around and I didn’t hate it. I’m not usually a fan of multiple POV’s but it was really helpful to go between each character and essential to how the plot is set. The plot? Yeah I’m still seriously shook. The phrase ‘the plot thickens’ is a suitable description. The author threw in so many twists and my jaw hasn’t managed to pry itself off the floor as of yet. I felt very different about certain people and understood their motives more so.
My new favourite characters are Sahara and Eydis. Sahara just makes me laugh, she’s such a likeable and entertaining character and I wouldn’t mind having her by my side in a fight or consuming way too much alcohol whilst blathering on about unfathomable nonsense, she’s such a great addition. Eydis is just like the best friend you always wanted, but also a complete queen (literally) who is worthy of your respect. She doesn’t take any bull, but she’s gentle and compassionate.
Some of the characters made me rather pissy and quite frankly I wanted to launch them off the nearest cliff. I felt the hurt and the anger and the betrayal, in some cases all at once. When a book can pull those feelings out of me, then it’s doing something incredibly right!
The story was full on and action packed from start to finish and unable to be put down.
My only complaint (and it’s not really a complaint) is that I NEEDED more of Fiore! I didn’t get the chance to gush over him too much and I’m very sad about it (sheds a tear).
