Emelina Flores has nothing. Her home in Ruina has been ravaged by war. She lacks the powers of her fellow Ruined. Worst of all, she witnessed her parents’ brutal murders and watched helplessly as her sister, Olivia, was kidnapped.
But because Em has nothing, she has nothing to lose. Driven by a blind desire for revenge, Em sets off on a dangerous journey to the enemy kingdom of Lera. Somewhere within Lera’s borders, Em hopes to find Olivia. But in order to find her, Em must infiltrate the royal family.
In a brilliant, elaborate plan of deception and murder, Em marries Prince Casimir, next in line to take Lera’s throne. If anyone in Lera discovers Em is not Casimir’s true betrothed, Em will be executed on the spot. But it’s the only way to salvage Em’s kingdom and what is left of her family.
Em is determined to succeed, but the closer she gets to the prince, the more she questions her mission. Em’s rage-filled heart begins to soften. But with her life—and her family—on the line, love could be Em’s deadliest mistake.
Revenge, Loyalty, Love. Which one will ruin her?
I bought Ruined this time last year and I only picked it up around Christmas! I don’t know why it took me so long (well I do, it’s the same with all new books I buy) but I’m so angry at myself for leaving it so long. I bloody loved this book!
I really enjoy story plots that revolve around revenge, so that’s what drew me to it. I love a good stabby Heroine and I got one as soon as I opened the book! The action began straight away as I was thrust in at the deep end – with a float mind. I instantly felt Em’s rage radiating off the page and I was inclined to share those feelings when the reasoning behind her actions came into play. I love a book that can make me FEEL and Ruined was not short of emotions running high throughout. I really connected with Em’s character and felt every emotion.
Em might be seen as the typical ‘bad-ass’ main character with a thirst for vengeance, but I loved her to pieces. Her one mission is to deceive and to save her sister, but she doesn’t count on what she finds in her enemy, or falling for him. Her feelings about certain things change upon meeting Cas and getting to know him, but her change of heart doesn’t go unnoticed. She’s kind of in the middle and I truly felt for her!
One of my favourite tropes is enemy to lover and I was happy to see it transpire in this book. Cas is one of those characters whom you take an instant liking to and are rooting for to sail the ship! He’s kind, courageous, honest and loves deeply, definite book boyfriend material. I lived for those little moments between Cas and Em!
The story contains bits of magic, but mainly towards the end and the twist is that Em was born without it and is branded ‘useless’ by her race. I found this twist really interesting and enjoyed the mix of magic vs non-magic, sometimes there’s just too much!
I read the book relatively quick given it was Christmas time. The story isn’t too hardcore but definitely packs a punch. I plan to buy the sequels soon and I’m excited to continue Em’s story.
