Popular Books I DNF

popular books I DNF (1)

Hey guys!

You know those books that get super hyped and you get so freaking excited to read and then you do and it’s just ‘ohh’ ..let’s talk about those!

Here are six popular books I DNF. If you adore these books then that’s honestly amazing, this is just my personal experience 🙂

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

the cruel prince

This entire series is extremely popular these days and I didn’t like it in the slightest – boo, hiss, get the pitchforks out! I’m sorry but I couldn’t get on with it. I think I made it about 40% of the way and just zoned out. When it got amazing reviews upon release I did give it another shot and flicked through the second half. What I found made me hate it even more. Needless to say I will never be going back in.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

The Hazel Wood

Sorry, what did you say? I couldn’t hear you over the amount of zzzz’s I was getting READING THIS BOOK. I expected this book to be a magical forest of wonder and darkness. I was just really really bored. I struggled to get through even 30% of it. I had so much anticipation for this book and it just fell flat for me.

Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

I received this book as a secret santa gift from my friend Ash and I was so excited to read it. Granted it took me like two years to get to it, but my expectation was high. I’m so sad to include this on the list, but it just wasn’t what I anticipated at all. In my head it was a story about a girl falling in love with Jack The Ripper, but alas no. Again I struggled to read much of it and sadly DNF.

Mirage by Somaiya Daud

My reasoning for DNF this one is because I didn’t understand or couldn’t get into the language used. It started out ok, but as I progressed I just wasn’t getting it. Oh the story I got and was enjoying, but the sci-fi-esque dialogue was just not for me. I don’t hide the fact that I’m not too into sci-fi, but I was hoping the story would prevail from the spacey language.

Throne Of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

throne of glass

I bought this book after loving the first two Court books. This was just not the same at all. It felt really slow and the story wasn’t gripping me. I completely shut off from what was happening and couldn’t connect with the characters. That’s a deal breaker for me.

Legendary by Stephanie Garber

legendary UK

This one cuts me real deep! I loved loved Caraval and even made people read it, but the sequel just didn’t do it for me. I believe the reason why is Tella. I loved Scarlett but Tella is not my kind of character and I didn’t connect. It makes me so sad to say I stopped reading it and never picked it back up, but I just didn’t want to. The magic from the first book was missing. Maybe one day I will try again? Honestly I’m not sure.

It’s funny how our reading preferences differ from book to book. You can completely adore one book and hate its sequel.

Did you DNF a popular book? Let me know!

Hope you enjoyed! Until next time💜

  1. The first time I read The Cruel Prince, I only gave it 3 stars, but after a reread I ended up liking the series! Stalking Jack the Ripper isn’t usually my type of book, but when I gave it a go I ended up liking it so much I binged all three books in a span of 2 days! I wasn’t a big fan of Mirage although I did finish it and have yet to reread the Throne of glass series (I stopped after the first 2 books and never returned). The first time I totally DNFed Caraval but after giving it another try, I finished the entire series and liked the books!

I’ve DNFed many popular books, but picked them up again after the hype died down and liked them better! Awesome post!

  2. The only one I’ve read so far is The Cruel Prince, which I did finish. I gave it 3 stars and I’ll admit that even though I finished it, I don’t really understand they hype around it

  3. If I thought that Stalking Jack the Ripper was about a girl falling for the ripper, I’d have been disappointed too! I am sorry that book, as well as Mirage and Legendary. I totally get why Mirage wouldn’t be for everyone though, especially if you aren’t a big sci-fi reader.

  4. I haven’t DNF’d a book in a while but I have a bad feeling about Legendary and have been putting it off because I’m not sure how I’ll feel about it. I feel like after things were revealed in Caraval (which I also loved) they lost that magic element and I’m worried that will affect the second book. As for Cruel Prince, I loved it but I can absolutely see why a lot of people don’t, it’s a very marmite book.

  5. I technically DNF’ed Stalking Jack the Ripper too, I started it years ago and never got into it, I put it down to start another book and never got back to it. I recently unhauled it too as I didn’t really interest me anymore.

  6. Gutted you didn’t enjoy The Cruel Prince, I’m not usually a big fantasy reader but it sparked my interest and I loved it 😊 Also a shame about Stalking Jack the Ripper, I recently listened to the audiobook and thought it was okay, I didn’t have high expectations and didn’t think it was about falling in love with Jack, can see why you didn’t enjoy it if you thought it was going to be different though! It sucks when that happens, don’t get the hype surrounding the series, but may try and read the second one. I really didn’t enjoy The Hazel Wood only gave it 1/5 stars, would have DNFed if I hadn’t received an ARC. This is such a great post idea 😊
